The Good Housekeeping Research Institute conducted tests on storage containers (both plastic and glass) to see which brands kept food fresh for longest. They also tested for leakage by shaking the containers and leaving them upside down. They assessed whether moist air was entering the sealed containers by placing silica gel beads in the container (they turned pink if air was entering). Finally they tested for staining, by microwaving tomato sauce in the containers. As you can guess, all the plastic containers got stained, but the glass ones did not. You can read their results here.

Of the glass storage containers they tested, here are the top three results:

    1. Snapware Glasslock. They didn’t get stained and GH felt that the glasslock tabs were easy to use. You can see our snapware listings in the sidebar on the right or by clicking the Snapware category at the top.

    2. Anchor Hocking Trueseal. The lids of the Anchor Hocking Trueseal containers got a perfect score for keeping air out of the container. This means they are perfect for storing foods such as sugar, which needs to be in a perfectly dry container (as water droplets in the air melts the sugar). They also didn’t leak when the container was turned over. Anchor Hocking Trueseal containers double as cookware and bakeware because they can go into the oven as well as microwave, which makes them one of the most versatile types of container. You can see our Anchor Hocking listings in the sidebar on the right or by clicking the Anchor Hocking category at the top.

    3. Bormioli Rocco Frigoverre. They found the glass bottoms to be stain proof, but the lids not as air-tight as the Anchor Hocking containers. But they scored for being the most aesthetically pleasing (they come with brightly colored lids and the frigoverre range has patterns on the sides of the bowls). You can see our Bormioli Rocco listings in the sidebar or by clicking the Bormioli Rocco category on the top.

Glass is made from silica, a mineral found in sand, but to enable it to cope with thermal shock (so that it does not shatter in extreme cold or heat), it is usually processed, and compounds are added to strengthen it. Here are some of the terms used to describe processed glass, with an explanation of what they mean:

Tempered Glass: Pyrex ware in the USA, Bormioli Rocco glassware and other brands of glass storage containers use tempered glass for their glass storage bowls. The glass is heated to just below it’s liquifying point and then before it softens, it is subjected to jets of extremely cold air to cool it very fast. This hardens the outside and inside surfaces of the glass and makes it resistant to thermal shock. The other advantage of tempered glass is that when it shatters, it breaks into small round edged pieces, instead of into sharp shards, which means you are less likely to cut yourself. Tempered glass is sometimes known as toughened glass. Most glassware that can go in the oven and microwave is made from tempered glass.

Soda-lime glass: This is glass made from about 75% silica, 12% soda, 10% lime, plus other minerals to color the glass. This type of glass is used to make cookie jars and most other types of glass bottles. Kinetic Glasslock and Snapware Glasslock containers are made from tempered soda lime glass – in other words, the soda lime glass is put through the tempering process detailed above to enable it to cope with high and low temperatures and allows the glass containers to go in the freezer and microwave – though you should note that Kinetic Glasslock and Snapware containers can not go in the oven.

Borosilicate Glass: This is a mix of silica and boron oxide which makes the glass resistant to thermal shock. Borosilicate glass was invented by Pyrex (who are owned by Corning) in the early part of the 20th century, and vintage Pyrexware is made of it. Borosilicate glass can usually cope with ovens as well as microwaves. Pyrex made in the USA is no longer made of borosilicate glass, instead they use tempered glass. Borosilicate glass is now mainly used for manufacturing laboratory glass ware, though you occasionally get some glass storage containers made of it for example the Innobaby rectangle container set.

Glass Food Storage Containers can last for decades if looked after properly, and some Pyrex Storage Containers actually become collectors items. So here’s how to care for your Glass Storage Containers:

    1. Store the containers in cupboards when not in use. You don’t really want dust, airborne cooking fat and other horrors landing on your glassware. Most storage sets contain nesting containers so they shouldn’t take too much room in your cupboards.

    2. Most glass storage containers can be cleaned in dishwashers these days (but if you are using antiques, clean them by hand with washing-up liquid). The general rule of thumb is that when hand-cleaning, round bowls are easiest. With the rectangular bowls, food attaches to the corners making it difficult to dislodge outside of a dishwasher. To make cleaning easier, either by hand or in a dishwasher, soak the containers for about an hour in soapy suds before washing, and the dirt lifts off easily.

    3. If you have just baked or microwaved in your glassware, allow the glass to cool before soaking it prior to washing.

    4. Some consumers report that even when they’ve dropped a Pyrex bowl, it hasn’t broken, but don’t take the chance! Treat all glassware as though it is breakable. That means storing them away from children and animals (the top shelf of the kitchen is usually out of reach of the most determined child).

Lots of people who use plastic food containers are now switching back to glass food containers. That’s because glass containers are more hygenic, they don’t warp in the microwave, they don’t absorb odours and smells or stains from the food they are storing.

In addition glass is inert – it doesn’t react with the food when heated, it doesn’t leach dangerous compounds into the food in the way some plastic containers do (foods with fats in them such as cheese and meat leach diethylhexyl adipate out of plastic when heated in plastic containers). There is also evidence that plastics leach Bisphenol A (BPA) into food, which has been implicated in some cancers. You may wish to look at the following US government factsheet on Bisphenol A. The tempered glass used to make the containers is also tough and does not scratch easily. And finally glass is easy to look after and easy to clean – it keeps it’s good looks for years, unlike plastic, which can get shabby within a year.

If you are interested in eco-friendly living, then you should know that glass containers can be recycled over and over without losing it’s purity or strength, which makes it the most eco-friendly substance used in cookware.

Modern technology has improved glass containers. The glass is now tough and non-porous. Glass food containers can withstand a large range of temperatures from the heat of ovens and microwaves, to the sub-zero temperatures of fridges and freezers. They are now even dishwasher safe.
